What is Botulinum exotoxin A (Botox)
Botox, which is also referred to asBotulinum exotoxin Α, is produced from the bacteria causing botulism. Botulinum Toxin blocks nerves action in the muscles, causing a temporary reduction of muscle activity.
Botulinum toxin belongs to the class of medications called neuromuscular paralytic agents. It inhibits the action of the nerves that are responsible for muscle activity. For cosmetic purposes, it can be used to smooth out facial lines and wrinkles (see facial mesotherapy), such as those that form between the eyebrows, on the forehead, and around the eyes (crow’s feet). It gives skin a smoother appearance by relaxing the muscles in the area where it was infused.
A wrinkle in the skin is typically formed perpendicular to a contracting muscle located directly beneath it. For example, the muscle in the forehead is a vertical muscle, and when it contracts when you raise your eyebrows, the lines that form (wrinkles) are horizontal.
Botox isinjected into muscles, where it blocks nerve impulses to the tissues. Muscle contractions that causes reduction of the frown lines, and a smoother look result. Without a contracting muscle beneath it, the skin has a difficult time wrinkling.
Within a few hours to a few days after the infusion of the toxin into the affected muscles, the spasms or contractions are reduced or eliminated altogether. The effects of the treatment are not permanent, reportedly lasting anywhere from three to eight months. By injecting the toxin directly into a certain muscle or muscle group, the risk of it spreading to other areas of the body is greatly diminished.
Facial lines that exist when your face is totally relaxed are not very good candidates for Botox. These lines are better handled by the injectable dermalfillers. Botox can frequently “soften” these lines, but it cannot always eliminate them.
